Solar Cells
Efficiency
Many people are starting to see the appeal of utilizing solar energy to provide for their electricity needs.
Solar energy is cheap, clean, renewable, and highly abundant, as compared to the conventional sources of
electricity which require the payment of steep bills every month, and which even pose a threat on the
environment because of the harmful gases they release into the atmosphere. So if this is the case, why aren’t
more people harnessing the power of the sun in providing them with electricity? One possible factor could be
that the level of solar cells efficiency, which serves as the core of solar panels, isn’t as high as most
people would require them to be; hence, the amount of electricity that they require can’t be supplied by solar
panels alone. This makes the power supplied by solar panels pale in comparison to the power supplied by
conventional power grids. Researchers and scientists, however, are well aware of this, and are continuously
taking steps in improving solar cells efficiency.
A Brief Background On Solar Cells Efficiency
The study of solar cells efficiency is actually something that involves a great deal of science and physics, but
for average consumers not familiar with scientific and technical jargon, what we most want to know is how solar
cells efficiency can influence the amount of electricity that can be generated by solar panels. The percentage of
solar cells efficiency actually refers to the amount of solar energy that is ultimately converted into more usable
electricity, out of all the energy that is collected by the solar cells in the solar panels. When the idea of
channeling solar energy into a more efficient form through the use of solar cells was first introduced to the
public, the percentage of solar cells efficiency was just at the rate of 4%. This efficiency rate is considered to
be quite low, and the lifespan of the solar cell at that time – or the period of time it would keep providing
solar-based electricity – was quite short as well. In current times, however, solar cells efficiency of
silicon-based solar cells have increased to an industry standard of 15%, which is mostly the efficiency rate that
is supplied by most commercially-available solar panel kits.
Studies And Records For Solar Cells Efficiency
Currently, the world record for the highest solar cells efficiency level ever reached belongs to the researchers
from the University of New South Wales in Australia, who were able to come up with a solar cells efficiency rate of
43% just this August 2009. At the beginning of 2009, the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems in Germany
was able to come up with an efficiency rate of 41%. Of course, these outputs were obtained in a laboratory
environment, so they are yet to apply their findings to commercially-feasible means. Though seemingly small in
increments, the increases in the efficiency rates that researchers are able to obtain already greatly develop the
concept of solar energy as a viable and sustainable electricity source.
But just because the efficiency level of solar cells hasn’t reached its optimum level yet doesn’t mean that we
can’t make use of solar energy now. Baby steps are all it takes in utilizing solar energy in your home. You don’t
have to completely power up your home through solar energy if it doesn’t seem feasible for you just yet; you can
start by utilizing solar energy to power up some of your appliances. Even something that is seemingly as minor as
this would already have a huge impact in the conservation of the environment, and in providing you with savings in
your electricity bill.
